In certain male fish, levels of 11-ketotestosterone increase during spermatogenesis in the spawning season, while in some females, levels increase before yolk deposition to regulate ovarian development. The presence and participation of 11-ketotestosterone in other species, such as humans, has recently been established, but this area of research is growing.
